Automation Engineer Intern (Summer 2026)

Responsibilities
You will learn to maintain and troubleshoot material handling control systems, including PLC/PC controllers and industrial networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, motor control systems, servo drives, frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems
You will monitor MHE metrics and partner with maintenance/operations to address system performance issues and provide analysis across all operations
You will drive standard work and continuous improvement through an intern project
You will be able to stand/walk during shifts lasting up to 12 hours, including climbing and descending stairs, and lifting up to 49 pounds
You will work shift patterns that may include nights, weekends, and/or holidays based on business needs. While shifts vary site to site, most follow a fixed 4-day work week with 3 days off
Qualification
Required
Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program with all requirements anticipated to be completed between December 2026 and August 2027. Bachelor's degree must be in computer science, electrical engineering or automation engineering
You will learn to maintain and troubleshoot material handling control systems, including PLC/PC controllers and industrial networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, motor control systems, servo drives, frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems

Preferred
Experience with HMI and control network components, including maintenance, troubleshooting, programming and design
Experience identifying, maintaining, troubleshooting, and modifying Motor Controls including motor starters, Variable Frequency Drives, DC drives, and standard electrical components
Hands-on industrial electrical experience, including 480V 3-phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
Experience with PLC-controlled automation and issue diagnosis in a continuous process or production environment
Experience with robotics work cells and their control systems
Experience with Ladder Logic and structure programming from Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Codesys PLCs
Experience with electrical theory, robotics, controls components, and automated equipment
