Responsibilities
Lead HVAC, fire protection, and thermal systems design for rail stations, tunnels, and support facilities
Prepare calculations, equipment specifications, and layout drawings compliant with standards (ASHRAE, NFPA, NYC & NYS codes)
Coordinate mechanical design with structural, electrical, and architectural disciplines
Support field reviews, submittal evaluations, and commissioning efforts
Evaluate ventilation and smoke control systems for stations, tunnels, and enclosed rail facilities in coordination with life-safety and fire protection requirements
Support constructability reviews and phased construction planning to maintain active rail operations during mechanical system upgrades
Design power distribution, lighting, communication, signaling support systems, and emergency power for rail infrastructure
Prepare electrical load analyses, conduit/cable schedules, and panel layouts
Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, MTA/Amtrak standards, and local utility requirements
Interface with transit system operations and CTS/SCADA teams
Coordinate traction power interfaces, utility service connections, and emergency power systems with transit operators and local utilities
Perform field inspections and testing oversight for electrical installations, ensuring compliance with agency standards and system reliability requirements
Develop plumbing, stormwater, sanitary waste systems for stations and facilities
Specify fixtures, pumps, backflow prevention, and drainage systems
Perform coordination with mechanical for water heating and mechanical room layouts
Review contractor submittals and perform site visits as needed
Design and review sump pump, drainage, and flood mitigation systems for below-grade rail infrastructure and station environments
Coordinate plumbing designs with civil and structural teams to address utility conflicts, penetrations, and long-term maintenance access
Lead multidisciplinary coordination meetings with clients (MTA, Amtrak, agencies), architects, and contractors
Prepare technical reports, specifications, and cost estimates
Review RFIs, change orders, and as-built documentation
Assist with QA/QC monitoring and compliance for all MEP engineering work
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Architectural Engineering (or related field)
5–10 years of relevant experience in rail transit/transportation projects
Strong knowledge of MTA, Amtrak, NJ Transit or similar agency standards and infrastructure requirements
Proficiency with industry design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, BIM 360, SKM, HAP, etc.)
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Able to work independently with minimal supervision
Preferred
Professional Engineer (PE) license in NY, NJ, and/or nearby state
Experience with transit project delivery methods (Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build)
Experience participating in system commissioning and field investigations
Knowledge of transit safety, reliability, maintainability, accessibility codes
