FT First Assistant Engineer, Marine Operations
Cape Fear Community College is seeking a First Assistant Engineer for their Marine Operations department. The role involves performing various duties in the operation, maintenance, and repair of ship engine room gear and machinery, both ashore and at sea.

Responsibilities
Stand engine room watches on the College’s sea training vessel on student training voyages and research voyages, contracted by outside agencies, a minimum of 76 days per year
Assist instructors in the operation of deck machinery and scientific equipment on sea training voyages
Assist in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and related vessel systems used in the College’s fleet of small vessels
Perform additional machinery maintenance and repair as necessary, as directed by the Chief Engineer
Assume the duties of the Chief Engineer in the event that the Chief Engineer is on leave or for any other reason unable to perform his duties or serve on a ship voyage
Respond to student questions as appropriate
Observe students to ensure adherence to safely measures
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualification
Required
High school diploma or equivalency supplemented by marine diesel engineering training; knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of ship propulsion diesel engines and other ship systems
A combination of at least two years of underway engineering experience in the operation and maintenance of a machinery plant on a seagoing or inland diesel powered vessel, or heavy diesel repair or similar training
Marine diesel engines operation and maintenance
Deck operations and equipment
Safe seamanship practices and procedures
Materials, tools and methods used in maintenance work
Proper care and use of tools and equipment used in maintenance
Proper safety precautions and firefighting methods aboard sea vessels
Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations
Maintain and repair marine engines and equipment
Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations
Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, communicating with others, operating assigned equipment, handling varied tasks simultaneously
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include standing, walking or sitting for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment, handling varied tasks simultaneously, bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds, working in confined spaces, working under harsh weather conditions, working at sea, working in high places
Effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to various hazards
Maintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of making sound decisions, responding to questions, demonstrating intellectual capabilities
Possession of, or ability to obtain, US Coast Guard STCW certification and Merchant Mariner's Document
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
Preferred
Experience in welding is preferred
Experience in the use and maintenance of deck machinery is preferred
Experience and competence as a machinist is highly desirable
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a U.S. Coast Guard license as an Assistant Engineer or a Designated Duty Engineer of Vessels up to 750 HP is highly desirable
Certification in refrigeration gas recovery is highly desirable
