Project Engineer

PTAG is a Project Management Advisory & Services firm trusted by leading utilities and infrastructure owners across North America. They are currently seeking a Project Engineer – Underground Transmission & Substations to support major high-voltage infrastructure programs. The role focuses on engineering, design, and lifecycle coordination of underground transmission systems and associated substation interfaces.

Responsibilities

Manage and support large, complex underground transmission projects from concept through commissioning
Perform detailed engineering analysis and develop conceptual and detailed designs for underground cable systems
Provide technical leadership on pipe-type and XLPE cable systems rated 60kV, 115kV, 230kV and above
Develop and review designs involving submarine cable systems, cathodic protection, and sheath bonding systems
Perform and validate pulling tension calculations, ampacity analysis, and impedance coordination
Develop technical specifications, construction documents, and engineering standards
Lead root cause analysis for cable failures or system performance issues and recommend corrective actions
Support integration of underground transmission systems with substations (GIS and AIS environments)
Coordinate grounding system design and protection/control interface alignment
Ensure compatibility between underground cable systems and substation equipment
Partner with Protection & Controls, Civil, Structural, and Standards teams to ensure design continuity
Provide technical support during construction, resolve field issues, and manage design changes
Coordinate closely with Asset Management, Standards, Operations, and Maintenance teams
Ensure engineering deliverables align with safety, quality, cost, and schedule objectives
Support emergency repair planning and long-term lifecycle strategy
Participate in commissioning readiness and energization activities

Required

Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical discipline from an accredited institution
5+ years of experience in underground transmission engineering within electric utility environments
Demonstrated experience supporting systems rated 60kV, 115kV, 230kV or higher
Hands-on experience with: Pipe-type and XLPE cable systems, Submarine cable systems and cathodic protection, Sheath bonding systems and cable sequencing impedances, Pulling tension and ampacity calculations
Experience coordinating underground cable interfaces with substation infrastructure
Strong understanding of utility standards, regulatory compliance, and IOU governance
Experience supporting construction coordination and issuing IFC drawings
Ability to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously
Strong communication skills in cross-functional utility environments
Authorized to work in the United States
Ability to work onsite in Oakland, California

Preferred

Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
Experience supporting emergency cable restoration and failure investigation
Experience participating in industry technical working groups
Experience supporting large capital transmission modernization programs
Professional Engineer (PE) license
