PhD Intern - Material Dynamics
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution focused on addressing significant scientific challenges. The PhD Intern in the Materials Dynamics Team will conduct research on advanced alloy systems for nuclear fusion reactors, involving microstructural and compositional characterization using electron microscopy techniques.

Responsibilities
Support research on advanced alloy systems for plasma-facing components in nuclear fusion reactors
Focus on microstructural and compositional characterization of promising alloys using cutting-edge electron microscopy techniques
Work closely with staff scientists to help design experiments, characterize specimens, and interpret results to understand phase stability under extreme conditions
Perform high-quality research suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals
Qualification
Required
Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college
Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required
Preferred
Currently enrolled as a PhD student in materials science or related field
Preferred candidates in their second, third, or fourth year in study
Advanced skills in various microscopy techniques, including FIB, SEM, electron backscatter diffraction, conventional TEM, aberration corrected atomic resolution STEM diffraction contrast dislocation imaging, and precession electron diffraction
Deep understanding of crystallography, orientation relationship, dislocation theory
Clear understanding about microstructural features and its role on properties
Experience working with materials for plasma-facing components is desired
Experience with micromechanical testing of materials is desired
Experience working on nuclear materials and radiation/helium effects is desired
