Payroll Assistant Trainee/Payroll Assistant - NYHELPS
The NYS Department of Transportation is seeking a Payroll Assistant Trainee to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll-related forms and tasks across three regions. The role includes processing various payroll documents, auditing payroll entries, and assisting other Payroll Assistants as needed.
Civil Engineering
Responsibilities
Process Direct Deposit, Tax Deduction, Address Changes, and Retirement Registration forms
Process Retirement Statement of Accruals
Enter historical employee data into a NYS Retirement System Application
Process time entry payments for temporary employees and other special payments such as Tool Allowance, Uniform Allowance, Call Out Bonus, and Shift Lump Sums
Process Lump Sum payments for retiring/resigning employees
Check and audit payroll processed by other Payroll Assistants
Answer emails and phone calls from employees, the Office of the State Comptroller, Human Resources offices, other agencies, etc
Cover other Payroll Assistants in their absence assisting with various regions
Archive old files, inactive employees, etc
Verify accuracy of Proposed Classification Request forms (PER 120)
Miscellaneous tasks and special projects as assigned by supervisor and payroll manager
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations
Qualification
Required
To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law
One year of payroll experience, which included computing time worked, salaries, and deductions
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education
Candidates selected for appointment must provide an original document to prove their citizenship and/or legal right to work in the United States
Candidates for employment must have proper authorization to work in the United States at the time an offer of employment is made
