Transportation Engineer Trainee(Surveys)

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Engineer Trainee to join their Bureau of Engineering and Construction. The role involves receiving training in professional engineering work, specifically in land surveying, and performing various types of land surveying tasks, including topographic mapping and construction surveys.

Responsibilities

Operate survey field instruments, such as conventional and robotic Total Stations, Auto and Digital Levels, GPS receivers, and LiDAR scanners
Use surveying software to perform complex computations
Use Microstation/Bentley OpenRoads CADD (computer aided design and drafting) to prepare, revise and edit land surveys for mapping
Develop topographic mapping and DTM’s (Digital Terrain Models) for future Highway and Railroad construction projects and support ongoing construction projects
Perform related duties as required inside the office and outdoors in the field year-round

Required

Possession of a Bachelor's degree
A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required and must be maintained
Applicants must be available to travel
Knowledge of basic transportation engineering theories, principles and methods
Skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments and other computer applications
Considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details

Preferred

Possession of a bachelor's degree in land surveying or possession of Land Surveyor (LS) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) licensure or CST Level 3
Experience spending time outdoors and desire to work outdoors year-around
Experience or knowledge with CAD (computer aided drafting) software
Experience or knowledge with land surveying practices and principles
Experience or knowledge working with surveying, engineering, and construction plan sets
Experience gathering field data for land surveying projects
Experience using Bluebeam, Microsoft Word, Teams Excel, Outlook, and Microsoft Word
Experience learning new technology, methods, and procedures
