Mosquito Control Technician

Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District is seeking seasonal Mosquito Control Technicians to join their team. The role involves performing inspections and mosquito control operations under direct supervision, including removing stagnant water and applying pesticides to minimize mosquito breeding.

Responsibilities

Removes water from mosquito breeding sources; treats areas where stagnant water cannot be removed or prevented; occasionally goes into bodies of water that require chest waders, uses assigned material and dosage rates and applies pesticides to obtain proper coverage and efficacy; monitors assigned area and re-inspects treated areas periodically to evaluate effectiveness; reapplies pesticide as needed
Enters updates of operational maps of assigned areas into the District’s database, including properties, ponds, and other features relevant to vector control operations; records changes on maps, recommending the addition of new sources, documents when pesticides were applied to specific locations; compiles data as directed on completed work, including locations, types of service, status of mosquito breeding sources, assists in collecting and compiling data and maintaining related records
Collects mosquito specimens from a variety of sources to support identification, monitoring and control efforts; and accurately records daily sampling data
Receives and responds to service requests; communicates with homeowners and residents; conducts inspections to identify sources and mosquito species; educates property owners and the general public on optimal prevention and reduction of mosquitoes
Refers all resident concerns or questions regarding mosquito control to the incumbent’s Operations Manager, Operations Supervisor and/or Senior Vector Control Specialist
Operates District vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, pick-up trucks, and powered and hand spray equipment; may drive for extended periods; conducts daily vehicle and equipment inspections; maintains equipment in working order and performs routine maintenance and repairs; as assigned; reports deficiencies in equipment and problems to supervisors
Assists in maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds as assigned
Keeps a neat and professional appearance during work hours
Interacts with co-workers at all levels in the District in a collaborative and customer service-oriented manner
Performs other duties as assigned

Required

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade
Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment
Any experience, education or training which demonstrates the abilities and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the position
Basic arithmetic and math skills
Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public and staff
The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work
Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed
Recordkeeping principles and procedures
Treat affected areas in accordance with District practices
Operate District vehicles and specialized equipment
Maintain logs and records
Understand and follow oral and written instructions
Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to work performed
Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work; to sit, stand, swim and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, balance, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp, and make repetitive movements in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to safely operate a motor vehicle and other large work vehicles and visit various District sites; and vision to inspect and operate equipment
Employees must wear and use the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Select District appointments are contingent upon successful completion of the following: Satisfactory background check verifying education, experience, and references; Insurability clearance under the District's insurance carrier and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program; Live Scan fingerprint examination and clearance; Satisfactory post-offer physical examination and drug screening performed by a medical provider and/or laboratory designated by the District
