2026-BWSO-009-GIS Data Maintenance Intern
The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers. They are seeking a GIS Data Maintenance Intern to work within the Technology Management Offices’ GIS Data Maintenance Unit, focusing on updates to the Citywide Geographic Information System (GIS) of the water distribution and wastewater collection networks.

Responsibilities
Interpretation of engineering construction drawings regarding capital improvement projects, engineering map changes, and field investigations
Utilize ESRI ArcGIS (including ArcMap) for map digitization and updates to asset features and/or attributes
Perform QA review for functional logic based on business rules for water/sewer networks
Utilize computerized data validation tools to ensure integrity/accuracy of data input
There may also be some office work
Develop a final presentation to display assignments they have been involved with while working as an intern at the DEP Interns Closing Ceremony
Qualification
Required
As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year)
Preferred
Student must be enrolled at a college or University majoring in at the undergraduate level majoring in civil, mechanical, or environmental engineering
Students must have at least a 2.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and a junior standing
Familiarity with water distribution and collection system features and processes
Ability to interpret complex engineering construction drawings and utilize computer based digital drafting software
Strong writing skills
Effective interpersonal skills
Familiarity and/or experience with computers/software including ESRI Arc 10.x Suite of applications
Self-motivation and ability to work well with minimal supervision
