Electrical and Controls Engineer (Hydropower)

Renew Hydro is a small but growing hydropower company operating multiple sites across New York. The Electrical and Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing and implementing electrical and control systems at hydropower sites, troubleshooting issues in the field, and collaborating with various teams to resolve system challenges.

Responsibilities

Troubleshoot, commission, and optimize hydropower electrical & control systems in the field
Develop, maintain, and improve PLC logic, SCADA/HMI screens, and control architectures
Diagnose issues with switchgear, relays, excitation systems, generators, VFDs, and instrumentation
Document designs, provide status updates regarding work performed in the field, and propose robust engineering solutions
Collaborate across mechanical and civil workstreams to resolve integrated system issues
Provide direction to external contractors and write and review requests for proposals and scopes of work for external contractors
Assist operators to troubleshoot electrical and controls systems both remotely and in person in the field
Travel to project sites frequently — expected travel could be up to 50% of the time. Generally, travel would not be required on weekends

Required

Mid-career engineer (≈5–7+ years experience) with strong hands-on troubleshooting instincts and experience working in power generation
Education or experience in electrical engineering, certified electrician, controls engineering, integration engineer, and/or automation technician or other related fields
Training or experience in PLC programming, power electronics, automation
Comfortable working independently and owning problems end-to-end
Willing to both work on a computer to come up with designs and documentation as well as go to the field and implement your designs and/or help figure out why existing systems are not working and fix them
Practical experience with PLC and control system programming
Capable with electrical systems, instrumentation, and industrial field equipment
Knowledge to know when something is more dangerous than you are trained to safely work on

Preferred

Comfort and expertise to safely work with high voltage electrical systems
Some skills with basic IT capabilities (networking, firewalls, VPNs, basic cybersecurity awareness, POE camera systems)
