Blade Technician Level II – Composite Repair Technician

As a Level II Composite Repair Technician, you will independently carry out intermediate-level wind turbine blade repairs and structural composite fixes while ensuring proper documentation of all work.

Responsibilities
Conduct thorough blade inspections covering all sections of the blade (leading edge, trailing edge, spar cap, root, tip, and shear web), identifying damage or wear
Perform composite repair processes such as sanding, grinding, scarfing, lay-up/lamination, gelcoat application, leading-edge protection (LEP) replacement, and post-cure finishing
Execute intermediate structural blade repairs, including:
Leading edge/trailing edge (LE/TE) damage remediation
Core material replacement (foam or balsa wood inserts)
Shell split (skin) repairs
Panel crack repairs
Perform additional blade fixes such as tip repairs, trailing edge paste remediation, and root ring repairs to restore blade integrity
Utilize advanced composite techniques like vacuum bagging and controlled curing for multi-layer laminate repairs
Conduct blade balances accordingly so that after repairs the blade’s aerodynamic balance and performance is correct
Read and interpret technical documents, including OEM repair manuals and blade damage reports
Install and remove blade add-ons (e.g. vortex generators (VGs)) as required by project scope
Complete detailed repair documentation with photos, measurements, and quality control checklists for each task, ensuring traceability and accuracy
Strictly adhere to all FairWind safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Working at Heights (WAH) protocols, and proper chemical handling procedures
Take a lead or active role in daily safety briefings and JSAs, and promote a safety-first mindset among the crew
Ensure all repair work meets Critical To Quality (CTQ) criteria and FairWind’s quality standards, conducting self-checks and peer reviews of work as needed
Take charge of suspended platform operations when required, ensuring safe and efficient work at height during blade repairs
Coach and mentor Level I technicians on proper repair techniques and safety practices, helping to develop their skills
Communicate repair progress, challenges, and completion status to site Supervisors, Project Managers (PMs), and OEM representatives clearly and promptly
Qualification
Required
1–3 years of hands-on wind turbine blade repair experience (composite repair and structural work)
Proficiency in composite repair techniques, including experience with scarfing, lamination, vacuum bagging, and resin curing processes
Ability to perform most blade repairs independently with minimal supervision
Willing and able to travel full-time (100% travel) and work comfortably at heights
Must pass a blade repair skills evaluation as part of the hiring process
Preferred
GWO (Global Wind Organization) training certifications
OEM-authorized blade repair certifications from major manufacturers (e.g., GE, LM, Siemens, Vestas)
IRATA or SPRAT rope access certification for working at heights using ropes
Confined space entry certification for internal blade or hub work
