Plant Process Engineer - Granulation Operations
Horizon Ag Products is a leader in the Biostimulant industry, manufacturing soluble humus products for Agriculture. The Plant Process Engineer in Granulation Operations provides technical leadership and operational execution to ensure efficient, safe, and reliable production of products at the Union City facility, focusing on process design, project management, and operational improvements.
Responsibilities
Lead design and development of granulation unit operations and process systems including material handling, conveying, drying, separation, pumping and piping, and packaging systems ensuring compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and RAGAGEP’s/BEP’s and federal, state, and local codes
Develop PFDs, P&IDs, plant layouts, mass and energy balances, utility requirements, equipment and instrumentation specifications, process control and automation strategies, and installation plans
Collaborate with leadership, operations, engineering, and vendors to align project scope and costs with business goals
Coordinate with cross functional teams (Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, and R&D) to ensure that production processes are evaluated and implemented in an efficient, cost-effective, and safe manner
Support new product development along with R&D and quality, develop plant pilot plans, implement full scale plant processes, and support new plant processes and projects
Develop Project Management plans and charts (Gantt) with milestones to track progress for resources, timeframes and costs for process and project installation, commissioning, and start-up phases and communicate to leadership any setbacks
Coordinate construction, installation, commissioning, and startup activities to ensure readiness for production operations
Communicate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders (leadership, quality, R&D, engineering, vendors/suppliers, equipment providers, contractors, etc.) to deliver on time, within scope, and on budget
Establish startup protocols, validate process performance, and support smooth transition into steady-state operations
Plan, coordinate, and oversee manufacturing activities to ensure production goals, quality and ISO standards, and orders meet target dates
Understand plant capacity constraints and identifying projects to streamline and remove bottlenecks to increase productivity, % uptime, rate, and yield to ensure plant operations meet OEE and KPI targets through continuous improvement and DOE activities
Ensure plant budgets are adhered to and identify opportunities to continuously improve and reduce annual operating costs through expense and capital-based projects
Providing day-to-day process engineering and technical support to plant operations including troubleshooting and providing technical direction to operators and maintenance technicians as well as others, as necessary
Develop and standardize SOP’s, control plans, and documentation for plant processes and ensure all personnel are trained effectively
Ensure all incidents are reported, investigated, and reported in a timely manner to leadership
Utilize systematic and structured methodology such as Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) and Weighted Risk Assessment (WRA) to identify, analyze, and quantify potential risks
Ensure all operations and activities are within safety and environmental compliance and in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations such as OSHA, EPA, or the State of Oklahoma
Qualification
Required
BS or MS degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Mineral Process, or similar engineering degree with 5-10 years of experience in a process engineering, plant design, or manufacturing operations role in a chemical, agricultural, or related industry
Applies core engineering and business principles and brings proven expertise in leading and executing plant design projects with strong project management fundamentals
Possesses in-depth knowledge of granulation unit operations and process systems including as well as unit operations such as screening, conveying, pumping, drying, separating, and packaging
Ability to demonstrate examples of success in project startup through process improvement and debottlenecking methods
Problem solver with ability to create solutions to the challenges within a mid-sized, growing manufacturing environment
Ability to travel up to 25% of the time to other Horizon Ag-Products locations
Strong computer skills and experience with AutoCAD or similar programs, Microsoft office, and the ability to perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time
Demonstrates strong planning, organizational, teamwork, and interpersonal skills, complemented by excellent written and verbal communication abilities to effectively engage with site personnel and key stakeholders
Comfort working in a plant environment and on teams comprised of operations, maintenance, engineering, quality, safety, and planning and working directly on the plant floor
Ability to work independently with a high level of initiative and self-starting skills
Capable of managing a heavy workload, establishing, and adjusting priorities as dictated by site and business needs
Experience with automation and control systems, historian, trends, and data analysis
Continuous Improvement, Lean or Six Sigma Manufacturing experience
