Responsibilities
Design, build, and operate scalable backend services using Java and Spring Boot, with a focus on correctness, performance, and maintainability
Contribute to system architecture decisions, collaborating with peers to ensure services scale cleanly from early adoption to large-scale usage
Write high-quality, production-ready code with clear ownership of service health, performance, and reliability
Design and evolve data models and access patterns using relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and, where appropriate, distributed databases
Build and maintain event-driven systems (e.g., Kafka, Pub/Sub) to support reliable asynchronous communication between services
Own and improve internal and external APIs (REST and/or gRPC), ensuring clarity, backward compatibility, and long-term extensibility
Partner closely with product, frontend, and mobile teams to define efficient, evolvable API contracts that support high-quality user experiences
Drive service reliability through thoughtful design, monitoring, and testing (unit, integration, performance)
Participate in on-call rotations and production incident response, applying learnings to improve system resilience and developer experience
Use AI-assisted development tools to improve velocity, code quality, and documentation, and help establish effective team workflows
Contribute to a strong backend engineering culture through code reviews, design feedback, and knowledge sharing
Help define and reinforce backend engineering best practices with an emphasis on ownership, pragmatism, and continuous improvement
Collaborate closely with product, frontend, mobile, and infrastructure partners to deliver cohesive end-to-end systems
Qualification
Required
Experience building, operating, and scaling backend systems in production, with impact on reliability, performance, and correctness. Scope and expectations will be matched to experience
Strong foundation in distributed systems concepts, including service-oriented architectures, data consistency, performance bottlenecks, and failure modes
Proficiency with backend development using Java and Spring Boot, or comparable production frameworks
Experience working with modern backend infrastructure, including: Containers & Orchestration: Deploying and operating services in containerized environments (e.g., Kubernetes). Data Stores: Relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL; exposure to distributed or cloud-scale databases is a plus. Caching: Designing and operating low-latency caching layers (e.g., Redis). Event-driven Systems: Building or contributing to event-driven architectures using technologies like Kafka or cloud pub/sub systems
A strong security mindset, including secure coding practices, authentication and authorization flows, and data privacy considerations. Experience working on systems that handle sensitive data (PII, financial data) is highly valued
Experience troubleshooting production issues in distributed systems, including performance degradation, reliability incidents, and operational failures
A product-oriented mindset, with the ability to balance technical trade offs against user impact and long-term system health
Comfort operating in ambiguity, taking initiative, and owning problems end to end in a fast-moving environment
Strong comfort using AI-assisted development tools to improve velocity, code quality, testing, and documentation—while maintaining sound engineering judgment
