Berkeley County (SC) Government is seeking a Fire Apparatus Technician to perform journey-level inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of fire apparatus and emergency vehicles. The role involves ensuring the safe and reliable operation of fire department vehicles and systems.

Responsibilities

Perform comprehensive inspections, diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on fire engines, ladder trucks, tenders, rescue units, and support vehicles, including engines, transmissions, drivetrains, brake systems, and suspensions

Test, diagnose, maintain, and repair fire pumps, valves, water tanks, plumbing, foam systems, and related components in accordance with NFPA, manufacturer, and department standards

Diagnose and repair complex electrical and electronic systems, including multiplexed wiring, warning lights and sirens, scene lighting, communications equipment, and line‑voltage systems

Perform annual and periodic inspections on fire department vehicles and apparatus, including operational road tests and pump performance tests, and document findings and repairs

Perform welding, fabrication, and modification work to install equipment, repair brackets, steps, compartments, and other apparatus components as needed

Maintain accurate computerized maintenance records, including labor time, parts usage, inspection results, and compliance documentation

Coordinate with fire operations staff to schedule repairs and minimize apparatus downtime, communicating status and safety concerns clearly

Respond to field breakdowns, perform on‑scene diagnostics and emergency repairs, and arrange for towing or recovery when required

Required

One or more EVT certifications (e.g., Fire Apparatus Level I or II) and multiple ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications

Experience performing pump testing, aerial device inspections, and NFPA‑compliant documentation
