Accounting Manager
Merz Apothecary is a unique retailer with a complex business model, seeking an Accounting Manager who will oversee financial operations and enhance accounting systems. The role involves managing month-end closes, supervising bookkeeping, and ensuring compliance while contributing to the company's growth and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Own and execute the monthly close across all entities and brands
Review and approve journal entries, accruals, and adjustments
Oversee reconciliation of all bank, credit card, loan, intercompany, inventory, and balance sheet accounts
Maintain a clean, accurate chart of accounts and accounting structure in NetSuite
Ensure discrepancies, variances, and shrinkage are identified, explained, and resolved
Oversee reconciliation of sales and deposits across all major sales channels (e.g., Shopify, Amazon, wholesale, marketplaces)
Ensure accurate posting and reconciliation of fees, chargebacks, and clearing accounts
Reconcile inventory value between subledgers and the balance sheet
Review and process vendor bill variances (quantity, price, FX gain/loss)
Oversee daily bill processing, coding, approvals, and payment scheduling
Review and approve vendor setups, payment methods, and prepayments (ACH, wire, EFT)
Manage check runs, positive pay, and bank payment controls
Ensure freight, G&A, and shared costs are allocated accurately across sales channels
Resolve vendor, bank, and internal discrepancies
Oversee bi-weekly payroll processing and payroll journal entries
Reconcile payroll-related balance sheet accounts and liabilities
Coordinate benefits, deductions, and 401(k) administration with providers
Support annual compensation and review cycles with accurate data and accruals
Manage sales tax filings, payroll-related filings, and other compliance requirements
Partner with external accountants on income tax filings and audits
Monitor daily cash balances across all bank and credit card accounts
Own short-term cash forecasting, including payables and known obligations
Flag cash risks, timing issues, or anomalies proactively
Maintain strong relationships with banking and payment partners
Own accounting SOPs, documentation, and training materials
Identify gaps, inefficiencies, and risks in existing accounting processes
Design, document, and implement improved workflows and internal controls
Partner with Operations and Leadership to align accounting systems with business needs
Ensure accounting processes are scalable, repeatable, and not person-dependent
Assign, review, and approve work completed by bookkeepers
Set clear expectations, deadlines, and quality standards
Train and support bookkeepers using documented SOPs
Gradually transition to appropriate execution work while maintaining accountability
Qualification
Required
5+ years of accounting experience with ownership of month-end close
Demonstrated experience in both hands-on accounting and supervisory review
Strong understanding of GAAP and internal controls
Proven ability to document processes and improve systems
Detail-oriented, organized, and highly accountable
Clear communicator who can explain financial information to non-financial teammates
Comfortable being hands-on while building toward delegation
Enjoys creating structure, documentation, and clarity
Proactive about identifying problems and proposing solutions
Trustworthy and discreet with sensitive information
Steady, reliable presence who brings order to complex financial operations
Preferred
NetSuite accounting experience strongly preferred
Experience in multi-entity, retail, wholesale, or e-commerce environments preferred
