Protection and Controls Engineer
Kintec Search, Inc. is seeking an experienced Protection & Controls Engineer to support the design and modernization of high-voltage substations and transmission infrastructure. The role involves developing protection and control design packages and ensuring the integrated execution of substation projects.
Responsibilities
Develop protection and control design packages for transmission and distribution substations (typically 69kV–500kV)
Perform engineering design work including: One-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, relay panel layouts and wiring diagrams, control house and equipment interface design
Support protective relay settings and coordination, including: Distance, differential, overcurrent, breaker failure. Settings calculations and logic development. Coordination with utility standards and protection philosophy
Participate in equipment selection and specification (relays, breakers, CTs/VTs, communication devices)
Collaborate with civil, structural, SCADA, and commissioning teams to ensure integrated substation execution
Provide technical support during testing, commissioning, and energization
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
7+ years of experience in Protection & Controls engineering
Strong background in substation protection design and utility power systems
Familiarity with relay platforms such as: SEL, GE Multilin, Siemens, ABB
Experience with relay setting tools and protection studies is a plus
Understanding of applicable standards (IEEE, NERC, utility practices)
PE license or ability to obtain in 12 months
Experience supporting renewable interconnections or large transmission projects
Knowledge of IEC 61850 and modern digital substations
Prior work with major utilities or EPC partners
Hands-on exposure to commissioning, testing, or field support
