Qualification
Required
Comprehensive knowledge of legislative processes at state and federal levels, including bill drafting, committee procedures, public safety policies, and rulemaking
Knowledge of criminal justice statutes, funding, and administrative mandates
Knowledge of government structures, interagency coordination, and the political landscape affecting public safety
Knowledge of grant funding, compliance, and budgeting principles
Strong written communication skills for drafting legislation, policy briefs, reports, and correspondence
Verbal communication skills for coordinating with legislators, staff, agencies, and external stakeholders
Analytical skills to interpret legislation, assess policy impacts, and summarize complex information
Organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple bills, deadlines, and priorities
Research skills using legislative databases, legal references, and policy resources
Relationship-building and coordination skills to facilitate collaboration across offices and committees
Proficiency in legislative tracking, research tools, and data management for monitoring policy developments and supporting informed decisions
Ability to track and monitor legislation through all stages of the legislative process
Ability to synthesize complex legal or policy information into clear, actionable summaries
Ability to work independently while coordinating with diverse teams and stakeholders
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment on sensitive matters
Ability to adapt quickly to changing legislative priorities and deadlines
Ability to support department heads and staff in hearings, meetings, and briefings
Ability to establish effective working relationships
Ability to read and comprehend a broad range of subject matter
Ability to communicate information in a clear and organized manner orally and in writing
Ability to produce written information, which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience
Ability to solve complex problems logically and systematically
Ability to make sound decisions and recommendations under conditions of urgency and pressure
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Political Science, Public Administration, or Social Science
Three years (3) of professional experience in researching, drafting, and editing legislative materials (ie bills, memos, reports) and tracking legislation and monitoring policy issues
In-depth knowledge of the legislative process at the state and/or federal level
