Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager

Responsibilities
Lead and manage the underwriting staff in the risk assessment, selection and decision-making. Ensure adherence to Group underwriting standards and objectives, with a focus on profitable growth aligned with Group strategy and approved business plans & budget
Excellent knowledge base of the commercial manual (rates, rules, forms) and technical mastery in the following products is essential, including strong knowledge of systems navigation relative to each product: ACE-14 Small Contractors, Inland Marine, Businessowners, Special Multi-Peril, Commercial Fire
Oversee, manage and delegate underwriting authority levels, in collaboration with the COO. Handle referrals, approvals or consultations from underwriters per established authority levels
Oversee the process & workflow of all new business applications, renewals, endorsement requests, non-renewals, policy change notices and cancellations assuring guidelines and underwriting philosophy is being followed. Promotes a profitable growth mentality within underwriting staff
Oversee Facultative reinsurance placements, ensuring no gaps in excess property exposure and protecting surplus
Maintain superior service standards of the commercial underwriting team and self. Respond to requests from agents, insureds, reinsurers or regulatory bodies
Maintain communication and relationships with vendors, including but not limited to: inspection & loss control providers, third-party data providers, technology providers
Complete underwriting file audits to assure underwriting alignment and affirm guidelines are being followed
Member of the Group Tactical Leadership Team who address operational issues and strategic direction of the Group’s companies. Takes ownership and successfully completes Tactical Plan Objectives, as assigned
Attend educational seminars/training to maintain industry awareness & trends, emerging exposures, and promote continued knowledge of current insurance practices
Visit new and current agents with marketing in order to explain our current products and strengthen agency-company relations, as necessary
Respond to coverage questions from the Claims Department
Perform other duties as assigned or required
Qualification
Required
7+ years of commercial lines underwriting experience in the property/casualty insurance industry required
3+ years of supervisory/managerial experience required
Should possess a high school degree at minimum, associate or bachelor's degree or diverse and progressively responsible roles and industry experience
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to interact with insurance software, and leverage technology to create improved processes and gain efficiency
Must possess high level mathematical and logic skills
Advanced knowledge of insurance regulations
Strong leadership and managerial skills – ability to organize, lead and get work done through others
Preferred
Insurance designation such as INS, AIS, CPCU preferred
