Responsibilities

Plans, assigns and explains work requirements to subordinates for new or changed programs and the functions, goals, processes, skills, and needs
Develops schedules, assigns patrol and special duties to staff, and ensures patrol coverage complies with agency policy and meets facility protection priorities
Ensures police staff are properly trained to operate a variety of equipment and/or security systems
Interprets security policies and procedures and provides guidance to facility leaders and staff
Keeps senior facility leadership informed regarding program successes and vulnerabilities
Serves as management's designated liaison, subject matter expert and consultant with federal law enforcement agencies such as the Office of the Inspector General-Criminal Investigation Division (OIG-CID), FBI, DEA, ATF, Secret Service, state and local law enforcement agencies
Assists in the development and modification of new Veteran-specific policies and procedures with focus on improving relationships between Veterans and Police Service
Maintains full responsibility for the protection of the civil rights of all individuals while on VA controlled property
Develops and implements procedures for the detention or arrest of individuals suspected of violations committed against criminal laws
Plans, directs, and updates the crime prevention program and exercises direction and control of investigations into criminal activities
Manages the procurement and accountability of equipment and firearms used
Performs related duties as required

Must successfully complete the VA Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Academy course and other mandatory training requirements set-forth by VA
Authorized use of a firearm, must meet the standards prescribed in the Lautenberg Amendment (PL 104-208) to the Gun Control Act of 1968 (18 USC 922)
A character investigation will be conducted on applicants selected for employment to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government
A medical examination is required due to the moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice
Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. A psychological examination is required
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization
