The State of South Carolina is seeking a Safety Coordinator for the Department of Public Safety. This role involves ensuring safety inspections, maintaining safety training, and overseeing safety policies and procedures for various facilities.

Responsibilities

Serves as the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) facilities and grounds safety officer for all SCDPS locations
Ensures safety inspections are completed as required, deficiencies rectified and that safety training for facilities, warehouse and custodial personnel is up to date
Serves as the chair of the SCDPS Safety and Emergency Response Team and attends organization and quarterly meetings
Is responsible for grounds signage and safety marking needs in conjunction with facilities management
Must maintain First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications
Ensures that all safety policies and procedures, evacuation maps, and records are up to date
Schedules and executes all drills
Ensures that SCDPS facilities safety training is up to date for applicable personnel (facilities management, custodial, warehouse, etc.)
Identifies all necessary training needed
Conducts Job Safety Analysis and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Assessments as needed
Ensures that the Hazard Communication Standard (HAZCOM) is up-to-date and published for all facilities
Responsible for ensuring chemical inventories are known statewide, Safety Data Sheets are accurate, and inventories are properly labeled and stored
Alerts supervisor of chemicals that need to be disposed of and identifies proper method for disposal
Ensures that safety processes are accurate, evacuation maps are current, and Safety and Response Team is current and trained
Ensures that Blythewood headquarters safety drills are complete throughout the year (fire, earthquake, severe weather/tornado) and that plans are in place for field offices
Completes facilities safety inspections statewide (all properties leased and owned)
Inspections of safety equipment onsite is required and shall be documented
Travel to all sites is required on a quarterly basis
In conjunction with facilities management, ensures contracted safety inspections, such as fire systems, are carried out and any issues resolved
Ensures all safety vendors are updated annually or as needed for proper event contacts (i.e. alarm system monitoring)
Chairs the safety and response team for Blythewood
Holds quarterly safety and response team meetings, assures the team is staffed and is involved during drills
Provides periodic safety communications for publishing to supervisor
May be asked to assist facilities management and Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) accreditation team with tasks from time-to-time

Required

A high school diploma and experience in occupational safety or industrial hygiene programs
A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience
Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to drive a motor vehicle
Must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning and have at least three (3) years of experience in occupational safety and health programs
Must have knowledge of applicable safety rules, regulations, and laws specifically toward general industry
Strong knowledge of typical occupational safety hazards, and the ability to identify deficiencies and resolutions of those deficiencies
Knowledge of HAZCOM to include proper chemical storage and disposal
Ability to interpret laws, rules and regulations
Must be able to communicate well in writing and verbally with multiple levels of employees and potentially the general public
Strong Excel skills are required

Preferred

Current OSHA certifications for general industry are highly preferred
