6+ years expESG Consulting is seeking a Senior Internal Auditor to lead and execute government audits in accordance with Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS / Yellow Book). This hands-on audit leadership role involves planning and performing audits, managing audit milestones, and ensuring high-quality audit documentation while communicating effectively with stakeholders.

Responsibilities
Plan and perform audits in accordance with GAGAS, including walkthroughs, control evaluations, testing, and evidence collection
Ensure audit work meets standards for sufficiency, appropriateness, supervision, and documentation
Lead assigned audit workstreams or smaller engagements end-to-end
Manage audit milestones, PBC requests, and daily coordination with process owners
Escalate risks, issues, and blockers proactively
Develop process narratives, Risk & Control Matrices (RCMs), and testing approaches
Apply the COSO internal control framework
Identify root causes and recommend practical corrective actions
Draft clear audit findings (criteria, condition, cause, effect, recommendation)
Assign risk ratings and support management action plans
Contribute to entrance and exit meetings
Assist with preparation of GAGAS-compliant audit reports (objectives, scope, methodology, findings, conclusions, management responses)
Perform remediation testing and re-testing
Validate corrective actions and document closure per agency standards
Use Excel and Power BI to support audit analytics
Apply audit analytics tools (e.g., ACL, IDEA) for sampling and anomaly detection
Maintain complete, review-ready workpapers in electronic audit systems (e.g., Diligent)
Follow agency templates and quality control procedures
Maintain independence and ethics consistent with GAGAS
Complete required GAGAS CPE
Contribute to continuous improvement of audit processes and templates
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
Minimum 6 years of internal audit experience
Demonstrated experience leading government audits under GAGAS / Yellow Book
Proven ability to lead audit workstreams or smaller engagements independently
Experience with risk assessment, control evaluation, and audit reporting
Experience mentoring or coaching junior auditors
Strong knowledge of Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS / Yellow Book)
Strong knowledge of IIA IPPF
Strong knowledge of COSO internal control framework
Strong knowledge of government compliance requirements
Experience with electronic workpaper systems (Diligent or similar)
Strong proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools (Excel, SharePoint, Teams)
Experience with audit analytics tools (ACL, IDEA preferred)
Preferred
Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) – highly preferred
