8+ years expAO Swag is building an internal IT core to reduce vendor dependency and support growth. The Senior Staff IT Engineer will be responsible for owning core systems, integrations, and operational reliability while collaborating with business leaders and junior engineers.

Responsibilities
Operational ownership and stability
Own day-to-day reliability of core business systems including order flows, integrations, internally developed services, and supporting infrastructure
Diagnose and resolve production issues at the code, data, system, and infrastructure levels without defaulting to vendors
Design, build, and maintain APIs, services, workflows, and integration logic connecting ecommerce, ERP, fulfillment, and third-party systems
Ensure systems and integrations are traceable, observable, understandable, and supportable by internal teams
Host and operate production applications and services, owning deployments, environments, uptime, monitoring, and backups
Create and maintain runbooks, system documentation, architecture diagrams, and incident response playbooks
Reduce recurring issues and operational noise through engineering improvements, automation, and simplification
Leverage AI and GenAI platforms to automate operational workflows, improve diagnostics, enhance observability, and accelerate internal tooling development where appropriate
Work alongside vendors and internal staff to absorb institutional knowledge from legacy systems
Isolate and stabilize legacy platforms while supporting migration and modernization efforts
Translate legacy behavior and vendor-owned logic into internally owned code and services where appropriate
Partner with IT leadership and external security resources to improve application-level access control, secrets management, and audit readiness
Support PCI posture improvements through system-level technical controls, secure integrations, and documentation
Help move ownership of systems, credentials, and service accounts away from vendors and into AO
Mentor and support application engineers including current staff and future hires
Set technical standards for system design, code quality, testing, documentation, observability, and operational readiness
Serve as a technical escalation point and decision-maker for complex system and integration issues
Help establish a culture of ownership, clarity, and accountability within IT and engineering
Qualification
Required
8 to 12+ years of hands-on engineering experience in production environments
Strong backend development experience with modern languages, frameworks, and API design
Experience building and operating system integrations, distributed services, and data workflows
Comfort working in imperfect, partially documented environments while improving them
Experience stabilizing legacy systems while delivering modern replacement solutions
Strong debugging and problem-solving instincts across application, data, and integration layers
Clear written communication and strong documentation habits
Preferred
Experience with ecommerce platforms, ERP systems, fulfillment, logistics, or manufacturing software
Experience with cloud platforms, containers, and CI/CD pipelines
Experience with messaging systems, event-driven architectures, or integration platforms
Experience supporting compliance-driven environments such as PCI or SOC
Experience working in small, lean internal teams replacing vendor-led models
Experience experimenting with or implementing AI/GenAI tools in engineering or operational workflows
