Human Resources Financial Analyst

Tuskegee University is seeking a Human Resources Financial Analyst to support its human resources and compensation functions through financial analysis and data-driven reporting. The role involves ensuring compliance and data integrity for the university's Defined Contribution retirement plans, as well as collaborating with HR and Finance on compensation strategy and budgeting.

Responsibilities

Review, interpret, and ensure adherence to the plan document and summary plan description (SPD) for all Defined Contribution plans
Assist in the preparation and execution of plan amendments, restatements, and updates to reflect changes in law (e.g., SECURE Act) or TU institutional policy
Maintain a library of all current and historical plan documents, amendments, and IRS determination letters
Serve as a subject matter expert on plan provisions for internal stakeholders (HR, Payroll) and external partners (recordkeeper, auditor)
Lead the end-to-end preparation process for the annual Fom 5500 series filing and related schedules (Schedule C, H, R, etc.)
Coordinate the collection of required data from the recordkeeper, trustee, and internal departments (Finance, Budgeting)
Perform analytical reviews of the draft census submission to present for Form 5500 accuracy and completeness
Liaise with external auditors to facilitate the plan audit and ensure timely incorporation of audited financial statements into the filing
Manage the filing timeline to ensure submission deadlines are met without extension
Design and execute processes for the accurate and timely collection of annual census data (employee demographics, compensation, hire/termination dates) and periodic payroll data
Validate and reconcile census and payroll data against HRIS and payroll system reports to ensure data integrity
Analyze census data to support mandatory IRS non-discrimination testing (ADP/ACP, Top-Heavy, 410(b) Coverage)
Calculate and validate compensation for plan purposes, identifying and resolving any discrepancies (e.g., ensuring the definition of compensation aligns with the plan document)
Perform detailed financial analysis related to plan contributions (employee deferrals, employer match, profit-sharing)
Reconcile trust statements to recordkeeper reports and general ledger accounts
Assist in the preparation of materials for plan committee meetings, including compliance testing results and financial metrics
Support internal and external audit requests by providing detailed data and analysis
Monitor and research changes in IRS and DOL regulations impacting defined contribution plans
Assist with corrections of operational failures through the IRS ’s Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System (EPCRS)
Support the year-end process, including the calculation and processing of true-up contributions and safe harbor notifications

Required

Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
2+ years of experience in retirement plan administration, compliance, or a related financial analyst role with exposure to 401 (k) plans
In-depth knowledge of IRS/DOL regulations governing defined contribution plans (ERISA)
High proficiency in data analysis and manipulation using advanced Excel (PivotTables, VLOOKUP, complex formulas) or data analytics tools
Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy when working with complex numerical and legal data

Preferred

Experience with HRIS and payroll systems
Higher education or public-sector financial analysis experience
Hands-on experience with retirement plan recordkeeping platforms (e.g., TIAA, Fidelity, Vanguard, Alight, Principal, etc.)
Direct experience preparing for and/or auditing for Form 5500 submission
