Art & Advocacy Teaching Artist (part-time)

The AjA Project is a nonprofit organization headquartered in San Diego, California, that utilizes media arts-based educational programs to transform the lives of displaced youth. The Art & Advocacy Teaching Artist will lead the Countersurveillance program, creating lesson plans and engaging curriculum using art and media arts for participants, while facilitating field trips and collaborative projects.

Responsibilities

Lead the Countersurveillance program with support by AjA’s team members
Create lesson plans, activities and engaging curriculum using art and media arts for the participants
Take the fellows to field trips to the border, or to a hearing in City Council
Be guided by AjA’s team on a final art project that could be showcased in public spaces
Spend 10 hours for the project to be successful, including 3 hours of teaching on Thursdays and 7 hours for meetings, debriefs, curriculum planning, lesson plan planning, and check-ins with fellows

Required

Punctuality and ability to provide a professional and supportive classroom environment for emerging artists and young people, or non-professional artists
Knowledge of best practices in working with complex topics like surveillance issues
Ability to research and didact complex issues for teaching
Experience facilitating mid to large-group discussions and activities using art and media arts
Experience working with BIPOC communities and youth
Strong communication skills and classroom management skills
Basic understanding and experience in activism and workings around advocacy (i.e. coalition, partners, press)
