Communications Specialist

Responsibilities

Support and execute media relations strategies that elevate the YMCA’s visibility and reputation across the region
Draft press releases, media advisories, talking points, and statements
Manage incoming media inquiries and coordinate interviews with YMCA leadership and subject-matter experts
Maintain media lists and monitor news coverage related to the YMCA, community issues, and key partners
Assist with crisis and issues communications as needed, following established protocols
Develop and distribute clear, timely internal communications for YMCA staff, leaders, and volunteers across multiple locations and program areas
Draft internal emails, memos, announcements, FAQs, and leadership messages
Support organizational initiatives by ensuring consistent messaging and tone across the Association
Collaborate with HR, Operations, and program teams to communicate policy updates, milestones, and organizational news
Write and edit compelling copy for a variety of channels, including website content, emails, newsletters, social media, presentations, and marketing materials
Ensure all content aligns with YMCA brand standards, voice, and messaging frameworks (e.g., mission, values, and Y for Life positioning)
Adapt content for different audiences, including members, families, donors, partners, media, and internal stakeholders
Proofread and edit content for clarity, accuracy, consistency, and tone
Work closely with the broader Marketing & Public Affairs team to support campaigns, advocacy efforts, and major initiatives
Coordinate with program leaders and executive staff to gather information and develop accurate, engaging communications
Support the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
Complete all child abuse prevention training as required

Required

Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or preferred
Minimum three years of related work
Strong writing skills and ability to self-manage
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to pivot seamlessly between strategy and execution
Experience responding to media requests and interacting with members of the news media
Exceptional understanding of social media platforms and analytics
Proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, Outlook) with the ability to learn new technology
Ability to travel locally on a regular basis to multiple YMCA Hubs when needed
