Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE)

Program Management & Control Services (PMCS) is a growing, multi-disciplinary firm providing specialized consulting services in public transportation projects. The Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) will perform inspection services on road, bridge, and transit projects in the Chicago area, focusing on structural applications and coordinating with various stakeholders.

Responsibilities

Assist with the inspection of completed work and document construction activities, including on bridge and/or other structural elements
Provide direction and guidance to more junior inspectors as required
Coordinate with the Materials Inspectors and other disciplines to arrange for sampling and testing of materials incorporated into the work
Work closely with resident engineer or supervisor to prepare reports detailing project estimates, costs, progress, risks and opportunities for review by senior management
Report to the Resident Engineer any failure of the Contractor to perform the work per the drawings and specifications
Electronically document pay quantities, material requirements, and contractor staff in a daily work report
Trouble-shoot engineering related issues in a field setting
Be fair and firm in dealings with the Contractor
Perform constructability reviews of design drawings

Required

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field
10 years of experience in engineering and/or construction management, ideally with a focus on structural inspection
Possess the ability to read and enforce working drawings and related specifications
Ability to give practical advice on structural construction matters
Willingness to commute to construction projects in varying locations, work in all weather conditions, and work in various shifts
Ability to prioritize project assignments to meet competing deadlines
Ability to collaborate well within teams, and promote effective problem-solving
Organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective decision-making
Possess a valid driver's license
Strong math skills

Preferred

IDOT, Illinois Tollway, Chicago Department of Transportation, Cook County, and/or CTA project experience
Experience with Trimble Unity Construct (e-Builder) and/or MicroStation
Professional Engineering license or structural inspection certifications
Intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
Ability to assist in developing strategic approaches and concepts
