Research Assistant I - Biobank

Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the pediatric biobank in collaboration with Texas Children’s Hospital. Responsibilities

Coordinates the receipt, accessioning, processing, and storage of biological specimens according to approved biobank standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Performs laboratory procedures such as DNA extraction from blood and other biospecimens using established protocols
Conducts literature and protocol reviews to support implementation of new sample types, technologies, or workflows
Oversees routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, automated platforms, and the biobank work environment to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency
Orders laboratory supplies and equipment and monitors inventory levels
Assigns activities to less experienced research or biobank staff
Performs other job-related duties as assigned in support of the biobank’s research mission

Required

Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field
Two years of relevant experience
Coordinates the receipt, accessioning, processing, and storage of biological specimens according to approved biobank standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Performs laboratory procedures such as DNA extraction from blood and other biospecimens using established protocols
Conducts literature and protocol reviews to support implementation of new sample types, technologies, or workflows
Oversees routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, automated platforms, and the biobank work environment to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency
Orders laboratory supplies and equipment and monitors inventory levels
Assigns activities to less experienced research or biobank staff
Performs other job-related duties as assigned in support of the biobank's research mission
This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application and throughout the duration of employment

Preferred

Master's degree in basic science or a related field
Experience performing DNA extraction and/or PCR
Experience operating liquid handlers or other automated laboratory equipment
Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently within defined protocols and make sound operational decisions
