2026 Summer Intern - Juvenile Justice Services

Chesterfield County is dedicated to serving court-involved youth and families through its Department of Juvenile Justice Services. The Summer Intern will work directly with detained youth, developing and delivering educational programs while collaborating with teachers and mental health staff to create enriching experiences during the Summer Enrichment Program.

Responsibilities

Work directly with our detained youth to deliver educational but fun and enriching programs during the month of July
Research programming, develop appropriate curricula, and deliver his/her selected programming to our residents
Work closely with our teachers and mental health staff to research programming and curricula and develop lesson plans while getting to know our facility and our residents
Deliver the programming to the residents in a classroom setting in support of Summer Enrichment Program
Have his/her own workspace and computer to conduct research and develop lesson plans
Perform other work as required

Required

Currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student with a minimum grade point average of at least 2.8
Ability to participate in the full 10-week program
Exhibit a commitment to public service
Genuine interest in learning about public administration
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required
Positive, self-motivated individual with good communication skills
Knowledge of adolescent development
Comfortable working with juvenile offenders in a detention setting
Ability to work effectively with some juveniles who have behavioral problems and mental health needs
Ability to facilitate psycho-educational groups
Possess knowledge and experience providing recreational therapeutic activities (Music, art, exercise, play, effective social skills, coping skills, stress management, etc.)
Fields of study may include psychology, sociology, social work, therapeutic recreation, drama, music therapy, art therapy, or physical education

Preferred

Ability to provide a structured program of care
Ability to provide a program of physical education and activities and/or art, drama, music
