The City of Phoenix is launching an innovative training program and seeks skilled Fleet Technical Training Specialists to lead the way. The role involves designing and delivering a comprehensive technical training program for fleet maintenance, impacting a large team of technicians responsible for over 8,000 vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities

Serve as a technical trainer and mentor, guiding Fleet Services technicians at all levels
Develop and implement a cutting-edge training curriculum, real-world learning models, and oversee the Fleet Services Service Worker II Apprenticeship program
Deliver positive hands-on instruction in automotive and heavy equipment repair, ensuring technicians master advanced skills
Create and manage training schedules for apprentices, new hires, and experienced staff
Apply your expertise to diagnose and repair complex issues in specialized areas such as electrical systems, hydraulics, transmissions, and engines
Inspect work and provide technical assistance and training to Auto Technicians, Heavy Equipment Mechanics, and Equipment Service Workers
Foster a culture of positive engagement, safety, innovation, and continuous improvement
Ensure regular and reliable attendance

Required

Three years of experience as an equipment mechanic above the apprentice level
Including six months of experience as an automotive mechanic AND completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a specialized field
Certification as a General Automobile Mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for all experience other than the specified experience or apprenticeship in a specialized field
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position
Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record
Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required
Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required

Preferred

Documented training from OEMs or industry providers (e.g., Cummins, Allison, Ford, GM, EV/HV safety)
Safety certification or safety-related experience: OSHA-10/30, LOTO, rigging/lifting, HV/EV safety, JSA development, safety committee participation
Documented roles building or delivering technical training (e.g., trainer, lead tech conducting classes, SOP/job aid development)
Three years of experience as an equipment mechanic at a journeyman level working in a fleet shop environment
