Fisheries Biological Technician

The Ahtna Intertribal Resource Commission (AITRC) is seeking multiple Fisheries Technicians to assist with aquatic research activities in the Copper River Watershed. The role involves various field projects including salmon monitoring, fish health surveillance, and environmental sampling.

Responsibilities

As part of the weir crew, set up and take down the weir. Monitor photovoltaic system, camera and DVR, physical weir, and review footage to report passage of salmon daily. Collect otoliths for population age composition
Access remote lakes via ATV/ORV/floatplane/by foot to deploy baited hoop traps. Identify, measure, and record catch. Position requires working in pairs and camping in remote study locations
Serve as a member of a two-person crew that will collect age, sex, and length data, and biological samples (heart, kidney, whole blood, etc.) from sockeye and Chinook salmon harvests in the Copper River
Access ten lakes in the Ahtna Region via ATV/ORV/Floatplane/by foot to collect environmental and biological samples to assess the feeding ecology and chemical exposure of fish species
Assisting with stream temperature data collection, water sampling, and juvenile salmon tagging

Ability to identify salmon and freshwater fish species of Alaska
Able to follow detailed sampling protocols, conduct biological sampling of fish, meet sampling goals, and provide daily reports
Scientific communication and ability to communicate professionally and respectfully
Must be organized and able to handle large data sets
Experience with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
Experience operating ATVs/ORVs/motor
