Low Voltage Electrical Systems Engineer 2/3

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Low Voltage Electrical Systems Engineer to join the Utilities and Infrastructure (UI) Facility Operations Division. In this role, you will ensure the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of electrical power systems that serve critical utility systems and laboratory facilities, while collaborating with various teams and applying sound engineering judgment.

Responsibilities

Integrate safety into all engineering activities
Stop work when unsafe conditions exist and support hazard identification and mitigation
Support compliance with NEC, NFPA 70E, DOE, and LANL electrical safety requirements
Support Utility Facility efforts as an Electrical Safety Officer
Engineer, analyze, and maintain low-voltage electrical systems supporting utility infrastructure and facilities
Serve as a technical authority for assigned electrical systems throughout their life cycle
Develop, review, and approve electrical designs, drawings, and specifications
Support lighting, grounding, lightning protection, and facility power projects
Provide technical input for procurement of electrical equipment and services
Troubleshoot electrical systems and support corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance
Coordinate closely with operations, maintenance, and project teams to resolve system issues
Work across engineering disciplines, document control, safety, and project management
Participate in technical meetings and communicate complex issues clearly and professionally
Serve as a primary point of contact for electrical engineering issues within assigned utility facilities
Perform power system studies (short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash)
Develop electrical design packages under guidance from senior engineers
Apply LANL's Conduct of Engineering (COE) principles in daily work
Serve as an Electrical Safety Officer (ESO) for assigned systems or facilities
Lead complex technical problem solving and system improvements
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to process and program enhancements
Provide technical leadership for electrical safety, design, and system performance

Required

Strong foundation in low-voltage electrical engineering principles
Experience applying codes, standards, and regulatory requirements
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-consequence environment
Sound engineering judgment and commitment to safety excellence
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience for Engineer 2
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience for Engineer 3

Preferred

Current registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable for Engineer 2
Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable for Engineer 3
Utility or industrial power systems
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) and Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS)
Power system modeling tools (SKM, ETAP, or similar)
Arc flash analysis and mitigation
Experience supporting mechanical or utility equipment (boilers, pumps, fans)
Familiarity with ArcGIS or facility information systems
