Lead Mechanical Engineer – Industrial Utilities & Plumbing

Planet Pharma is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer with deep experience in industrial utility systems and plumbing to support large-scale capital projects at a regulated manufacturing site. This hands-on, senior technical role involves designing systems end-to-end and serving as the subject matter expert from concept through commissioning.

Responsibilities

Designing complete utility systems, including calculations, sizing, specifications, and P&IDs
Developing construction documents for industrial and commercial code-compliant plumbing systems
Specifying major utility equipment (boilers, chillers, cooling towers, compressors, tanks, skids, etc.)
Performing vendor and bid evaluations and participating in factory acceptance testing
Supporting construction through contractor oversight, field coordination, and issue resolution
Leading startup, commissioning, documentation, and turnover activities
Analyzing and upgrading existing utility infrastructure to support new operations
Serving as the site subject matter expert for industrial utility design and construction
Collaborating closely with manufacturing, operations, project engineering, and external vendors

Required

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
Ability to obtain a North Carolina PE license
6+ years of industrial engineering experience (10+ years strongly preferred)
Proven experience independently designing industrial utility and plumbing systems
Strong hands-on technical capability (not advisory-only or review-only)
Comfortable working onsite in a manufacturing environment
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Preferred

Experience in biotech, pharmaceutical, chemical, or regulated manufacturing environments
Exposure to FDA-regulated operations
Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D, or PipeFlo
HVAC experience (not required, but a plus)
