NC20 Crew Superintendent, Wildland Fire Management Specialist (WFMSpec)

The State of Washington's Department of Natural Resources is seeking a NC20 Crew Superintendent for the Northeast Region. This role is integral to the suppression efforts during the fire season and involves responsibilities such as hiring staff, training the crew, and ensuring effective fire response operations.

Responsibilities

Responsible for the hiring of permanent staff and the overseeing of hiring seasonal staff
Responsible for assigning work for the Crew
Responsible for the training and preparedness of the Crew to be initial attack ready by June 1
Provide wildland fire response in Region while being prepared and available for fire response out of Region
Coordinate the Crews' availability to assist with prescribed fire, community resilience projects and forest health treatments
Ensures that the assigned work center is maintained throughout the year. Coordinates with Region staff on any deficiencies and/or building maintenance

Required

NWCG Qualification as Single Resource Crew Boss
Experience in agreement and contract negotiations
Supervisory experience, which may include fire line supervision
Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Word, and PowerPoint
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Encourages team unity through sharing information or expertise, working together to solve problems, and putting team success first
Accustomed to tailoring communication to the needs and preferences of others
Creates a positive work environment where all staff are motivated to do their best
Safely performs work at all times. Avoids shortcuts that increase health and safety risks to self or others

Field and Office: Position's assigned duty station is the Chewelah Peak work center. Work is performed in an office setting (30%) and alone in isolated unimproved natural areas within the unit (70%). Incumbent must be able to traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions
Position requires travel (50%) to the field for project work, fires, or supervision, attend meetings or various trainings. Frequent overnight travel is required for trainings, meetings, and fire assignments. Often required to work long, irregular hours on workdays, weekends, day or night
A current valid driver's license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years
Must annually pass the work capacity test at the arduous level as required by NWCG and the required qualification for the position

Preferred

A bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field
NWCG Qualifications: Incident Commander Type 4, Task Force Leader
Commitment to continual learning and adaption to technology advances
Skills in evaluating others' abilities and assessing training needs
Facilitative skills to work with groups of people to solve issues
