Activity Specialist - Parks & Recreation (Temporary/Part-Time)
City of Downey is seeking an Activity Specialist to create engaging and inclusive recreation experiences for youth and park patrons. The role involves designing and overseeing various programs, supporting Special Olympics activities, and mentoring part-time staff while maintaining a safe environment in park spaces.

Responsibilities
Answers the telephone and wait on the general public, giving information as required
Coordinates, promotes, implements and evaluates recreation activities as assigned
Create flyers, update social media, and correspond with partners
Organizes and schedules recreational activities
Recruits, supervises, evaluates, trains and disciplines part time employees
Prepares or coordinates the development of event publicity, including news releases, flyers, pamphlets and brochures
Schedules working hours for part time recreation staff
Administers and coordinates payroll duties for assigned personnel
Participates in the development of the annual budget for a recreation activity or group of activities
Maintains records and develops reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness
Maintains inventory of supplies and necessary equipment
Distributes equipment and supplies to staff
Qualification
Required
High School graduate or equivalent
Two (2) years of experience in the recreation field
Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
Principals and applications of the Microsoft Office Applications including Word and Excel
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing
Ability to maintain effective relationships with public and staff
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
Ability to work cooperatively with others
Ability to provide leadership
Ability to work with minimum supervision
Ability to plan and organize their work and the work of others
Position requires access to reliable and efficient method of transportation as travel may be required by duties
Enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program
Physical ability to perform essential functions of the job including sitting, using hands, ascending and descending stairs, maintaining body equilibrium, moving about on hands and knees, bending, reaching, speaking, hearing, and lifting 10 to 50 pounds
Preferred
Experience in the implementation of recreational activities is desirable
Benefits
Temporary/Part-time appointments do not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law.
Enrollment in an alternative retirement program is mandatory which requires an employee contribution of 7.5% of base earnings.
The City contributes 2.5% and the employee contributes 5% of base earnings.
