Responsibilities

Help drive the success of Alaska DOT&PF’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) unit
Support critical projects and programs that demand sound judgment, rapid problem-solving, and decisive action
Be part of a response team that supports operations during major events such as typhoons, avalanches, winter storms, flooding, and serious crashes
Deliver timely, accurate traveler information that keeps Alaskans safe and informed
Play a key role in modernizing transportation operations statewide by expanding and integrating emerging technologies such as Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Remote Weather Information Systems (RWIS), drones, and connected and autonomous vehicle systems

Required

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the core competencies of: Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems
Analytical Thinking/Problem Solving: uses a logical, systematic, sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one's knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary
Written Communication: Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience
A valid driver's license is required
Engineer Associate: Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying or architecture, of which one year was as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere
Engineering Assistant 3: Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET
Engineering Assistant 3: Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere
Engineer/Architect 1: Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment
