Chief Financial Officer
Journey Mental Health Center is a nonprofit agency focused on mental health and substance abuse recovery in Dane County. They are seeking a Chief Financial Officer to direct financial strategies and operations, ensuring sustainability and growth while navigating the complexities of healthcare funding.
Responsibilities
Ensure policies and procedures relating to internal controls, compliance, daily operations of general accounting functions, cash receipts, purchasing and payroll are in place and sufficient to ensure the integrity of the financial systems
Direct agency financial budgets for annual operations and contract/grant proposals; prepare annual and long-term capital improvement plan and budgets
Senior level oversight of the accuracy and compliance of monthly and annual financial reporting, including grant and contract reporting, and the distribution to all internal and external users within required reporting requirements
Provide financial and data analysis for financial organizational decision making, productivity improvements, and strategy
Oversight to ensure financial, retirement plan, and workers comp audits are coordinated and all required client-prepared work papers and supporting documents are provided to the auditors on a timely basis
Maintain working knowledge of US GAAP and relevant tax issues
Provide communication to incorporate audit findings and recommendations into agency policies and procedures
Oversee all financial operations for the agency, and expense oversight as they relate to the overall financial health of Journey, with ultimate responsibility for the risk management function
Advise the COO in the negotiation of significant financial aspects of contracts
Participate in Directors group, management/supervisor meetings, working with directors and managers to ensure their ownership of the budgetary aspects of their programs
Provide guidance to the Board of Directors and Senior Managers on strategic business matters, including the Finance Committee, to provide analysis, presentations and financial operations feedback
Work with the CEO and other Directors to design and implement broad agency policy and procedures and develop and implement new agency initiatives
Collaborate with the CEO to achieve continuous organizational improvement and strategic goals, advising, strategizing and counseling the CEO on all financially related and significant matters
Attend external meetings with the CEO or on behalf of Journey, as required
Teach basic business and finance principles to team members as needed
Qualification
Required
Ten years of leadership experience in a not-for-profit organization or a health care organization with multiple contracts and complex funding sources
Excellent problem solving and analytical skills as they relate to large systems with multiple programs and funding streams, and the ability to integrate new information and initiatives into current agency systems
Experience budgeting for contracts and grants, including annual and long term financial and capital planning, in accordance with regulations, compliance guidelines and restrictions of various funding sources
Strong understanding of not-for-profit tax filings, including IRS Form 990 and Wisconsin Form 1952; experience with tax and compliance requirements relating to payroll and retirement plans
Advanced knowledge of computer applications, including Excel, Microsoft Word, Accounting software
Strong understanding of IT and information systems supporting financial analysis and reporting, including the ability to interpret data for impact analysis and decision-making
Extensive experience in design and oversight of internal control systems, accounting and reporting systems, internal audit systems, annual audit, and general financial reporting systems
Excellent organizational, written and oral presentation skills, including experience presenting to a Board of Directors
Extensive supervision experience and ability to work as a leader in a team environment
Ability to work both remotely and at Journey's office on Madison's west side
A prioritization of a culturally competent environment and service delivery system
All potential candidates will need to successfully pass the Background Information Disclosure (BID) for entity employees and contractors
Preferred
Knowledge of third-party billing and managed care systems
BA/BS in Accounting or related field and/or CPA/CMA certification
MBA or other advanced business degree(s)
