Premium Tax Manager - career growth opportunity
Vaco by Highspring is seeking a Premium Tax Manager responsible for managing premium tax compliance, reporting, and strategic planning specifically for insurance companies. The role involves oversight of surcharge and assessment compliance and requires strong business and financial acumen to interact with senior level executives.
Responsibilities
Oversee accurate and timely preparation and filing of state premium tax returns and estimates for various entities
Ensure state mandated assessments and surcharges are remitted to tax authorities in a timely manner while limiting the net tax impact on the business
Serve as a primary point of contact and manage responses to inquiries and audits from state taxing authorities
Conduct detailed tax research, staying current with changes in tax laws and industry trends, and documenting tax positions to ensure compliance
Delivering accounting and operational support across all areas of the business
Oversee daily/monthly/quarterly operational activities. Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data
Deep understanding of SOX requirements, ensure compliance in all transactions and support SOX testing request
Provide high quality reporting and analysis to be used both internally and externally
Develop systems, process and controls to enhance efficiency and effectiveness
Complete ad-hoc analysis as requested by senior management
Identify improvement opportunities in current processes. Revamp processes that need enhancement, recommend solutions and implement changes
System-oriented. Evaluate feasibility to automate currently manual processes. Lead system implementations
Supervise, train & develop staff, ensuring job duties are completed successfully & career progression supported
Ability to work with other departments and collaborate outside of Finance
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in accounting of finance required; CPA preferred
Strong knowledge of premium tax regulations, accounting principles, and insurance industry standards is essential
10+ years progressive accounting and 5+ years managing insurance accounting/tax teams
Prior experience in public accounting or a publicly traded company preferred; insurance industry required
Must have experience reviewing premium tax and familiarity with assessment, surcharges, duplicative tax credits
Experience reconciling between GL balance and payments going out, getting refunds back, ensure not overaccrued
Experience building out a team to support company growth and onboarding acquisitions
Experience automating processes, tax forecasting, standardizing across the board, implementing best practices
Experience communicating with state tax authorities and 3rd parties (in process of outsourcing premium tax filings with Manager review - Manager will drive that ship and fully transition to 3rd party)
Strong communicator, friendly leader, doesn't mind getting in the weeds and doing staff level work at times
Proficient use of Excel, preferably with experience using pivot tables and vlookups
Self-motivated and takes initiative with ability to work independently within a team setting
