Responsibilities
Fully own the mission, goals, operations, and results of the team and areas of responsibility
Provide strong leadership to span of control (direct and indirect reports); demonstrate effective leadership in all interactions companywide
Establishing the vision and tone for the department, consistent with company culture and mission
Establishing clear, measurable, and achievable goals and performance expectations and following up appropriately
Hiring individuals who can accomplish those goals and meet those expectations; providing them the open communication, training, tools, and mentoring needed to be successful and develop professionally; establishing a development path commensurate with capabilities and potential
Providing clear and accurate feedback to individuals and teams on a timely and consistent basis
Identifying and addressing performance problems early and effectively before they damage GCI’s interests and demoralize other employees
Effectively managing processes including annual performance reviews, compensation adjustments, promotions, demotions, transfers, and disciplinary actions up to and including termination in an unbiased and consistent manner
Provides comprehensive oversight of daily facilities maintenance operations across assigned buildings, remote huts, generator sites, warehousing spaces, mechanical rooms, and grounds
Ensures timely and effective execution of preventive and corrective maintenance activities to maintain operational readiness of critical telecommunications infrastructure
Conducts routine site inspections, monitors the performance of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire suppression, backup power, and environmental control systems, and ensures all assets operate within required standards
Responds promptly to work orders, service requests, and emergency repair needs, prioritizing actions based on safety considerations, customer impact, and network or facility operational dependencies
Provides and manages the staffing, organizational structure, policies, procedures, and documentation required to support the facility operations mission
Oversees facilities including Central Office, Microwave, Cellular, Switch, and Earth Station shelters
Promotes a positive, productive, and respectful work environment and maintains a union-free workforce through consistent communication, proactive performance feedback, and recognition of employee contributions
Oversees work scheduling, assignment of preventive maintenance routines, and coordination of corrective work activities across multiple facility locations
Ensures accurate completion of maintenance reports, material requisitions, and administrative tasks associated with facility operations
Monitors the quality and technical accuracy of work performed by staff and contractors and ensures compliance with all safety, security, and operational standards
Provides guidance on troubleshooting and system diagnostics and ensures facility systems are maintained in accordance with manufacturer requirements and regulatory specifications
Develops and manages operational and capital budget inputs for personnel, materials, equipment, and facility system needs
Prepares forecasts, cost estimates, and recommendations to support short- and long-term planning for infrastructure and facility investments
Assists in reconciling budget projections with actual expenditures, identifying variances, and recommending corrective actions as needed
Ensures financial stewardship in selecting contractors, procuring materials, and prioritizing work based on operational and business impact
Assigns, schedules, and oversees work activities for facilities technicians, custodial personnel, and contractors to ensure timely and efficient completion of assigned tasks
Provides daily operational direction, technical guidance, coaching, and on-the-job training to support skills development and safe work practices
Monitors workload distribution, performance, safety compliance, and adherence to company policies, intervening as necessary to address performance gaps or workflow challenges
Ensures high levels of communication, coordination, and accountability across all staff
Establishes and maintains strong working relationships and effective information exchange across UUI, GCI, and other internal departments
Coordinates activities related to special projects and customer requests to ensure alignment with facility operations capabilities and timelines
Ensures accurate tracking and documentation of regulatory compliance requirements such as EPCRA and SPCC and provides necessary information for annual filings and regulatory submissions
Facilitates communication and collaboration across functional groups to support operational planning, network needs, construction schedules, and emergency response readiness
Leads the coordination of vendor and contractor activities, including onboarding, scheduling, gaining site access, and daily workflow management
Ensures contracted work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications and contractual obligations
Inspects work quality, verifies materials, and ensures compliance with company standards, permitting, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols
Serves as the on-site point of contact during maintenance, repairs, construction, and facility upgrade activities
Ensures strict adherence to OSHA, EPA, and company safety protocols across all facilities operations
Conducts safety briefings, toolbox talks, hazard assessments, and routine compliance inspections to maintain a safe work environment
Maintains accurate and comprehensive documentation of maintenance activities, inspection findings, equipment logs, asset records, and regulatory reports
Supports environmental, safety, and audit processes and ensures timely resolution of identified risks or deficiencies
Promotes a strong safety culture and leads by example in maintaining safe work practices across all operations
Coordinates all logistics required to support field work and facility maintenance in both urban and remote Alaska locations
Plans and schedules travel, organizes equipment staging, and ensures materials and tools are available for technicians and contractors
Supports operational planning for bush flights, marine or ferry access, snow machines, ATVs, and vehicle fleet needs
Anticipates weather-dependent challenges and adjusts plans to maintain productivity, safety, and operational continuity
Ensures proper fuel access and storage, remote-site readiness, and contingency plans for remote field operations
Qualification
Required
A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis
High School diploma or equivalent
Bachelor degree in Facilities Management, Engineering Technology, or related field
Minimum five years' experience within facilities, building maintenance, or related technical experience
Including a minimum of one year in a supervisory or management position; may be substituted with equivalent demonstrated functional leadership experience
Preferred
Experience within telecommunications, utilities, or similar 24/7 operational environments
Experience with CMMS systems and work-order software
Ability to prepare detailed budget for all departmental needs to include manpower, material, equipment, transportation, freight, training, etc
Other relevant telecom industry or job specific certifications
OSHA 10/30, HVAC license, boiler certification, or other trade credentials
