Recycling & Trash Services Operator - Downtown

The City of Wilmington is seeking a dependable, safety-minded individual to operate a non CDL-required trash truck or flat bed truck in the Central Business District of historic downtown Wilmington. The role involves collecting refuse and recycling, maintaining cleanliness in public areas, and supporting special assignments during city events.

Responsibilities

OPERATE TRUCKS by performing required morning pre-trip and evening post-trip inspections, learning assigned route, and safely unloading collected materials
COLLECT AND DISPOSE OF WASTE AND RECYCLEABLES by ensuring disposal guidelines by item type are followed and maintain safe practices at all times
DAILY STREET AND SIDEWALK SANITATION by use of hand and powered tools like brooms, shovels and pressure washers
SUPPORT SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS to include working City holidays and festivals, delivering carts or barrels for special events, assisting other drivers as needed, and cleaning the truck weekly
MAINTAIN A CLEAN AND SAFE WORK ENVIRONMENT by following safety protocols and proper equipment operation procedures

Required

High School Diploma or GED
one (1) year of related solid waste collection experience
Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record
ability to lift 75lbs for extended periods of time
perform duties in inclement weather conditions
ability to obtain FEMA independent study course certificate within 60 days of hire
City licensure for golf cart operation within 60 days of hire

Health Insurance - The City offers two options for health coverage: a standard PPO plan and a High Deductible Health Plan with an associated Health Savings Account.
Dental Insurance - Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following 30 days of employment.
Life Insurance - The city pays to provide coverage valued at one times your annual salary.
Retirement: - NC Local Government Retirement System -All benefits eligible employees make a mandatory 6% contribution every pay period.
- Deferred Compensation – The city contributes an amount equal to 4.5% of the annual salary to a 401(k) plan regardless of employee contribution.
