Intern, Technical Undergraduate Summer - Explosives R&D, Onsite
Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation, with teams of specialists focused on cutting-edge work in a broad array of areas. We are seeking a highly motivated undergraduate student to join our Explosives R&D Department as a summer technical intern, where you will work on challenging projects and collaborate with experienced engineers and scientists to develop a science-based understanding of explosive components and energetic materials.

Responsibilities
Assist with diagnostic development and experimentation related to dynamic energetic material phenomena
Provide support in the study of properties of energetic materials at various length and time scales
Assist with operation a variety of 3-D printing systems for a diverse range of materials and applications. This includes maintenance, minor repairs, and programming toolpaths
Help with the design, setup, and execution of experiments involving explosive materials
Analyze data and recommend modifications to designs or test procedures to meet desired specifications
Collaborate with Principal Investigators and technical staff members to achieve project goals
Qualification
Required
Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S
Preferred
An Explosive Technician Certificate or equivalent
Experience with laboratory procedures and protocols, particularly in a high-safety rigor environment
Familiarity with design software, analysis, and instrument tools such as LabVIEW, SolidWorks, and MATLAB
Knowledge of mechanics or related technologies, such as computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing software
Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and teams
