Traffic Signal Timing Engineer

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting for a Traffic Signal Timing Engineer. This role evaluates and develops traffic signal timing, phasing, and coordination plans for signal networks, ensuring safe and efficient operation for all highway users.

Responsibilities

Evaluates and develops traffic signal timing, phasing and coordination plans for signal networks (both existing and new installations) on the state highway system
Oversees and manages ongoing statewide traffic signal performance goals as established in the statewide signal performance priority plan
Assesses and effectively manages the multi-modal transportation needs of motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, truck drivers, emergency vehicle operators, and mass transit users
Acts as MDT’s subject matter expert for traffic signal timing matters

Required

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
Four (4) years of progressively responsible highway engineering experience
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is required
Written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical audiences
Attention to detail
Scheduling and prioritizing
Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities on short notice
Ability to problem solve
Accuracy under pressure

Preferred

Experience in traffic engineering is preferred
