Legal Instruments Examiner (Inmate Classification & Computation Technician)

Responsibilities
Serves as an Inmate Classification & Computation Technician located within the Designations and Sentence Computation Center (DSCC) for the Federal Bureau of Prisons
Responsible for Judgment & Commitment files, sentence computations, release audits of computations, computation case audits, security and control of records, and initial inmate classifications for designations
Collects all necessary information from the US District Court, US Marshal Service and US Probation Office, or other authorities needed to request and provide designation and compute inmates’ sentences
Serves as a subject matter expert, assisting institution staff with responses to questions and interpretations of status and case law within their respective field
Qualification
Required
U.S. Citizenship is Required
Education: GL-06 and GL-07: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GL-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position
Experience: GL-06 and GL-07: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level
Experience initiating and composing standardized legal documents routinely needed for legal actions
Experience establishing, maintaining or closing case files or systems of legal records and abstracting data from files and records
Experience with the security and control of records, verifying authenticity of court orders, and parole actions
Experience with reviewing and verifying various legal instruments to reconcile discrepancies or inconsistencies
Experience performing basic sentence computations and forwarding the material to a technical expert for examination
Experience with the security and control of records, verifying authenticity of court orders, and parole actions and coordination of offender transfers with other agencies
Ability to communicate orally
Ability to communicate in writing
Knowledge and skill in interpreting and applying regulations, rules and laws relating to legal instruments
Ability to organize and maintain record and filing systems
