INTERDISCIPLINARY NUCLEAR ENGINEER/HEALTH PHYSICIST
NAVWAR is seeking an Interdisciplinary Nuclear Engineer/Health Physicist to serve in the Radiological Emergency Planning Division at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The role involves preparing procedures for emergency responses, monitoring personnel exposure to radiation, and coordinating with other facilities for effective radiological emergency planning.

Responsibilities
You will prepare technical and administrative procedures for Shipyard response to reactor accidents and radiological emergencies
You will monitor personnel who might be exposed to fission products or other radioisotopes
You will work with other Naval Shipyards and facilities involved in radiological emergency response to integrate planning, design, acquisition and use of radiological instrumentation, data control, communication and public warning systems
You will evaluate Shipyard performance in drills and training exercises, identify deficiencies, and recommend/initiate corrective actions
You will coordinate acquisition, modification and utilization of emergency response facilities and equipment, such as emergency control centers, communication systems, etc
You will review technical papers and regulatory requirements, as well as attend seminars and training sessions available at universities and other facilities, to stay abreast of the latest requirements and innovations in emergency planning
You will perform other duties as assigned
Qualification
Required
Must be a US Citizen
Must be determined suitable for federal employment
Must participate in the direct deposit pay program
New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check
Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level
Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326
Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service
You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty
Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present
You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs
You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination
You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift
This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites
You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time
For the GS-0840-12: Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying techniques used to minimize the spread of contamination, environmental impact and health hazards from a radiological emergency, to plan and evaluate Shipyard radiological emergency response actions
Experience providing expertise in radiological emergency planning through furnishing advice, evaluation and resources to Shipyard and other facilities
Experience applying knowledge of reactor plant and nuclear ship design and operating characteristics to understand the failure modes and resulting personnel, operational and environment hazards
Experience identifying the identity and quantity of radioisotopes expected to be encountered
Experience using communication systems, metrology instrumentation, ventilation systems and Shipyard nuclear facilities to assess the need for improvement and provide technical input to develop improvements
For the GS-0840-11: Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying techniques used to minimize the spread of contamination, environmental impact and health hazards from a radiological emergency, to assist with planning and evaluating Shipyard radiological emergency response actions
Experience assisting with radiological emergency planning through furnishing advice, evaluation and resources to Shipyard and other facilities

Basic Requirements For GS-1306: Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus
