Responsibilities
Maintain quality standards throughout product development
Conduct R&D tasks including complex projects, sample prep, and testing
Perform sensory and nutritional evaluations with external labs
Lead stability testing to establish product shelf life
Document ingredient and formulation data using software
Collaborate with Marketing, Regulatory, and Manufacturing teams
Work with suppliers to gather safety and efficacy data on ingredients
Plan trial production runs and improve production workflows
Define product specifications and ensure compliance during manufacturing
Drive cost-saving initiatives through expense analysis
Understand ingredient properties and their effects on product quality
Design formulations and prepare prototypes aligned with product concepts
Improve manufacturing processes for efficiency and safety
Apply knowledge of relevant pet food regulations in R&D projects
Stay current with nutritional and manufacturing technologies
Share industry insights with the team through ongoing learning
Analyze consumer test results to guide product improvements
Benchmark competitor products and identify market opportunities
Monitor market trends to inform development strategies
Assist in training new team members on lab techniques and protocols
Perform additional duties as assigned
Support product concept development and line extensions
Manage projects with cross-functional teams to meet deadlines
Oversee consumer testing and raw material inventory management
Qualification
Required
4+ years of combined experience in scientific research, product development, and formulation
Experience with formulation software and product testing
Knowledge of industry regulations (AAFCO/FEDIAF)
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Strong project management and analytical skills
Understanding of ingredient functionality and product characteristics
Effective communication and teamwork abilities
Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, Animal Science, or other relevant fields is required for the Formulation Scientist (Nutrition)
Preferred
Previous formulation/product development experience in the pet food/nutrition industry
Experience with extrusion and retort manufacturing
Positive attitude toward AI tools to improve productivity
Familiarity with extrusion and retort processes is a plus
Master's degree is a plus
