Project Manager/Estimator
Responsibilities
Review and analyze bid documents, architectural/structural drawings, specifications, and RFPs to prepare detailed take-offs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, metal decking, and related components
Perform quantity take-offs, calculate labor, material, equipment, subcontract, and overhead costs to develop accurate and competitive bid estimates
Identify value engineering opportunities to optimize steel designs and reduce costs while maintaining structural integrity and code compliance (including seismic requirements)
Prepare and submit bid proposals, including scope clarifications, assumptions, exclusions, and pricing breakdowns
Follow up on bids, participate in pre-bid meetings, and negotiate with clients/general contractors as needed
Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned projects once awarded, coordinating with internal teams (engineering, detailing, fabrication shop, erection crews) and external stakeholders (clients, architects, engineers, subcontractors)
Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, and resource plans; track progress and manage changes/variations
Oversee project execution, including material procurement, fabrication coordination, delivery, erection sequencing, and field installation
Monitor costs, prepare progress reports, manage billings, change orders, and claims; ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality/safety standards
Conduct project close-outs, including final inspections, punch lists, documentation, and lessons learned reviews
Promote safety compliance and risk management throughout the project lifecycle
Qualification
Required
5-10 years of experience in structural steel estimating and/or project management, preferably with a steel fabricator/erector
Proven track record of preparing bids and managing structural steel projects (commercial, industrial, seismic-sensitive, or design-build preferred)
Experience with traditional steel framing, truss moment frames, metal decking, miscellaneous metals, and in-house fabrication processes
Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting structural drawings, blueprints, and specifications
Solid understanding of steel material costs, labor rates, equipment, and industry standards (AISC, AWS, local building codes)
Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills for accurate take-offs and cost analysis
Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., FabTrol, Tekla EPM, Bluebeam, or similar), Microsoft Office Suite (Excel advanced), and project management tools (e.g., Procore, Microsoft Project)
Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time-management abilities to handle multiple projects/deadlines
