Vice President of Accounting
The YMCA of Greater Boston is seeking an outgoing, self-motivated, detail-oriented Vice President of Accounting for their Associate Office at the Huntington Ave YMCA. This role is responsible for managing the organization’s core accounting, reporting, and compliance activities, ensuring accurate financial data, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting budgeting and forecasting processes.

Responsibilities
Serve as the primary executive owner of internal controls, audit readiness, and external audit execution; ensure compliance with GAAP, FASB, IRS, and state regulatory requirements, grant and contract compliance, and all lender and bond covenant obligations
Oversee and maintain YGB’s accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls, ensuring consistent application across the organization. Maintain deep technical oversight of complex accounting areas, including revenue recognition, deferred revenue, investments and endowments, capital project accounting, and fixed assets
Lead financial reporting and close processes for monthly, quarterly, and year-end results, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial statements. Partner with the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis to incorporate key financial metrics into management and board reporting packages
Partner with the CFO in presenting financial results and key accounting matters to the Finance, Audit, and Risk Committees, and in financial reviews with current and prospective lenders
In partnership with the CFO, VP of Risk, and YP of Information Systems, identify, assess, and mitigate financial and operational risks, including liquidity, capital, cyber/technology, and funding concentration risks, and support enterprise risk management processes and reporting
Lead preparation and oversight of all required external financial reporting and compliance, working with internal teams and external advisors
Other statutory filings related to property, payroll, and regulatory compliance
Establish and enforce best practices for accounting policies, procedures, and month-end close, including review of balance sheet reconciliations, variance analysis, and financial statement quality
Design and implement internal auditing procedures to assess and strengthen internal financial controls, business processes, and compliance practices across the organization
Provide strategic leadership over financial systems, data governance, and process automation, ensuring systems are scalable, well-integrated, and capable of delivering timely, accurate, and decision-ready financial information
Oversee of financial compliance related to grants and contracts, including review of major agreements, adherence to revenue recognition standards, cost allocation requirements, and financial reporting obligations
Ensure systems, processes, and documentation are in place to meet grant billing, reporting, and audit requirements, and that financial systems support timely and accurate grant reporting
Oversee an internal compliance program for grants, procurement, and contracting, ensuring YGB remains current with evolving federal and state requirements
Partner with the CFO, Program Directors, and Development leadership to support the pursuit and financial structuring of public and private funding opportunities aligned with the Association’s financial sustainability and recovery goals
Lead, develop, and scale the Finance team, including hiring, performance management, professional development, and succession planning, while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Actively participate as a member of the senior leadership team, including leadership development conferences, the YMCA Annual Campaign, and Association and Branch special events
Qualification
Required
BS/BA Degree in Accounting or Finance
At least 8 years of professional experience managing a diverse staff
Relevant accounting, financial reporting & planning experience
Strong understanding of Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) statements
Not-for-profit accounting experience
Reporting under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
Preferred
Certified Public Accounting (CPA)
Graduate degree in accounting or finance
A combination of public & private accounting experience
