Research Scientist II

Responsibilities
The Research Scientist II will perform sequencing related tasks associated with HIV and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) for the Bloodborne Viruses Laboratory
These tasks will include extraction and amplification of nucleic acids for sequencing, analysis of sequencing data using bioinformatics tools, and clinical validation of new sequencing assays
The Research Scientist II will also prepare standard operating procedures, reports, manuscript sections, and oral and poster presentations
Duties also include processing of human biospecimens, clinical testing using molecular or serological test methods, training and supervision of staff, quality assurance activities and laboratory maintenance tasks
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and three years of research experience; OR a master's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a doctorate in a related field
Degrees must be from an accredited institution
This position will require the incumbent will meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements
Preferred
At least one year of experience with molecular techniques including DNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction, transcription mediated amplification, and sequencing methods
At least one year of experience in molecular data analysis and the use of scientific software to analyze sequence data for the detection and/or characterization of pathogens
At least one year of experience handling and processing human blood specimens in a clinical laboratory environment
Excellent written and oral communication skills
