Associate Systems Engineering Technician

The Associate Systems Engineering Technician will assist with the development, assembly, and testing of instruments and equipment for in-vitro diagnostic tests, collaborating closely with engineers to troubleshoot and improve designs.

Responsibilities

Design, construct, assemble, debug, and test prototypes, fixtures, instruments, and automation equipment
Design electro-mechanical test fixtures using CAD. May also design electrical and mechanical components and sub-assemblies of instruments and automation equipment
May fabricate mechanical components, particularly parts machined by CNC milling. Such machining would include converting SolidWorks CAD files into CNC files, mill setup and programming, machine operation, and part measurement
Fabricate and assemble electrical and electronic assemblies
Maintain organized inventory of laboratory spare parts, components, fasteners and hardware, and lab tools and equipment. Select and purchase materials, parts, tools, and equipment
May coordinate periodic equipment calibration with Metrology. May also maintain development equipment and machines
Provide design verification test support
Provide technical assistance as well as recommend alternatives to engineers
Support design and technical reviews
Contribute to system design history files
Work with external vendors to meet part/assembly design specifications
Utilize Exact Sciences computer applications such as Agile and SAP
Schedule, execute, track, and document reliability and performance tests, with guidance as needed from engineers or managers
Troubleshoot bugs, failures, and issues with electrical and mechanical components and assemblies, using precision mechanical measurement devices and standard electrical test equipment
Effectively record, reproduce, and communicate software and hardware issues (bugs) and contribute to their resolution
Contribute ideas for new products and product improvements
Critically evaluate designs for function, reliability, and manufacturability
Ability to lead the team to keep lab areas clean and organized
Works on many complex and varied projects at one time, while navigating and adapting to ambiguous and changing plans and circumstances
Capable of working independently and resolving design conflicts and/or ambiguous instructions

Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures
Maintain regular and reliable attendance

Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day
Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 50% of a typical working day
Ability to work on equipment requiring kneeling or lying down for approximately 15% of a typical working day
Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height
Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements
Ability to use various types of hand tools and laboratory equipment; including, but not limited to, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, cutters, screw cap containers, and pipettes for extended periods of time
May perform repetitious actions using hand or power tools
Constant walking or motion to coordinate work and interact with co-workers and equipment
May be required to work in presence of energy, electrical, kinetic (moving parts), extreme hot or cold temperature hazards with provided training and protective equipment
May be required to work with chemical or biological hazards with provided training and protective equipment
Ability and means to travel up to 15% between Madison locations
Ability to travel up to 15% of working time away from work location

Required

Associates degree in a science or technology field, or field as outlined in the essential duties
7+ years of experience with assembly, test, and repair of electro-mechanical systems
Ability to use SolidWorks or SolidWorks Electrical for the design modeling and drawing of mechanical and electromechanical parts, assemblies, and instruments
Proficient with mechanical tools and basic mechanical measurement tools
Proficient with electrical tools for wiring and soldering
Strong understanding of electrical circuits and diagrams, including use of common electrical measurement tools such as multimeters and oscilloscope
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel
Experience with electrical and mechanical fabrication, construction, and troubleshooting
Experience reading electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred

Experience performing precision machining, particularly CNC milling, is preferred
5+ years of SolidWorks experience and/or SolidWorks certification is preferred
Some basic experience with software and firmware coding is desirable
Experience documenting and editing electrical wiring diagrams, preferably using Solidworks Electrical
Understanding of NEC and NFPA electrical standards
Knowledge of standard testing strategies such as regression, black box, white box, boundary condition, and performance
