Human Resources Specialist
Des Moines Performing Arts is seeking a Human Resources Specialist to support daily operations that keep the workplace running smoothly. The role involves onboarding new team members, maintaining employee records, assisting with payroll and benefits, and supporting both employees and leadership in various HR functions.

Responsibilities
Assist with recruitment activities, including posting job openings, reviewing applications, scheduling interviews, and maintaining candidate records
Coordinate onboarding logistics for new hires, temporary staff, and interns, ensuring required systems access and resources are prepared in advance of start dates
Maintain accurate employee records, personnel files, and HR databases, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal requirements
Assist in benefits administration, including enrollment, changes, and general employee inquiries, working with vendors as needed
Assist with special HR projects and initiatives, including policy updates, employee engagement programs, process improvements, and other assignments as directed by HR leadership
Serve as backup for payroll processing as needed, including preparing payroll inputs, verifying data accuracy, and assisting with payroll-related inquiries
Help coordinate training programs and professional development initiatives, including scheduling sessions and tracking completion
Assist in monitoring performance management processes, including collecting evaluation forms and maintaining documentation
Provide support in employee relations matters by documenting inquiries, complaints, and resolutions, and escalating issues to HR leadership as appropriate
Maintain HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook, ensuring staff have access to current information
Support HR reporting and compliance activities, including preparing routine reports, assisting with I9/OSHA/EEO data collection, and ensuring documentation is complete
Qualification
Required
Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or relevant HR or experience
1–3 years of combined education, internship, or work experience in human resources or related administrative functions
Exposure to HR practices, payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, or employee relations
Strong interest in developing a career in Human Resources and supporting organizational goals
Possesses universal respect for views, ideas, backgrounds, attributes, and appearances different from one's own
Ensures accuracy in records, data entry, and HR documentation
Effectively communicates verbally and in writing with employees, managers, and external contacts
Handles sensitive and confidential information responsibly and discreetly
Works cooperatively with HR colleagues and across departments to achieve shared goals
Manages multiple tasks and priorities efficiently to meet deadlines
Provides professional and helpful support to employees and managers
Identifies issues and seeks solutions or escalates appropriately
Uses HR systems, databases, and office software effectively
Adjusts to changing priorities, policies, and work demands with flexibility and resilience
Preferred
Exposure to HR practices, payroll, benefits administration, recruiting, or employee relations
Familiarity with HRIS systems, office software, and basic reporting
