Responsibilities

Collect samples and perform chemical analyses on boiler water, feed water, and condensate samples. Make chemical feed adjustments to ensure desired qualities are maintained based on results. Perform chemical feed adjustments in plant systems and recommend the initiation, discontinuance or alteration of feeds to protect or improve efficiency of each system. Communicate with the Control Room Operator on blow down requirements and the drum pressure limits necessary for protection of the boiler-turbine system
Operate and calibrate water sample panel instrumentation and keep reagent levels within proper limits to provide continuous monitoring of water panel samples
Perform chemical analyses directed on samples from other systems such as water pretreatment, circulating water, sulfur dioxide absorber, bearing cooling water, makeup water, HVAC’s, and environmental processes. Recommend initiation, discontinuance, or alteration of chemical feeds to systems to protect or improve efficiency
Perform tests on both solid and slurry forms of fly ash, lime, and limestone, and record and report data
Operate the ion exchange mixed bed condensate polishers. This involves performing polisher resin regenerations, monitoring controls, operating valves, and changing resin
Assist Operations personnel with the lock-out and tag-out procedures for isolating lab equipment scheduled for maintenance or repair
Assist maintenance and operations personnel when the use of hazardous chemicals or laboratory equipment is required
Assist maintenance personnel in the testing and calibration of laboratory monitoring equipment and maintenance of water treatment equipment. Assist in locating and making condenser tube leak repairs. Make inspections of boiler water, feed water, and condensate equipment during outages. Inform supervision immediately of potentially hazardous and/or damaging plant conditions
Assist in the cleanup and remediation of chemical spills as a member of the chemical spill control team. This requires HAZWOPER training that will be provided
Perform other duties as assigned

Required

A bachelor's degree with emphasis in chemistry plus 2 years of lab technician experience; or
2 years of college chemistry plus 4 years of lab technician experience, of which 3 years must have been as an apprentice laboratory technician; or
A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and 6 years of related lab technician experience
A valid driver's license
This position is subject to scheduled and call-out overtime assignments
Knowledge of math and chemistry
Ability to weigh/measure, conduct research, analyze data/reports, implement recommendations, direct others, and develop plans, procedures, and goals
May be required to work under pressure
Experience with personal computers, and Microsoft Word and Outlook
